About travel from Boston to New York next summer

Travel from Boston to New York next summer?
My girlfriend and I are planning on flying out to Boston, getting a car, and travelling up the coast to New York to fly back to Denver. I'm looking for any ideas "off the beaten path" to see/do, and also, what is the best/cheapest way to plan this itinerary? She's never been to the East Coast, so I really want to make it a memorable trip. Our time frame is 1-1/2 weeks.

I'm from upstate NY - What do you like doing? What month are you coming. If its during the july/aug time I would say definitly stop at saratoga race track. Saratoga is beautiful and the race track is amazing! What airport are you flying out of?

I would definitely stay in Boston for a couple of days....great downtown...fun bars and shops...plenty to do. Then head down to Newport, Rhode Island....it is an older little town along the coast. It's really pretty and you can go on tours of old historic mansions....its not boring...its actually really interesting. Its a nice town to experience the ocean and stuff....very calm and relaxing. In upstate, NY Saratoga Springs is cool for the horse races. http://www.newportchamber.com/ Vermont is really pretty too....but since you're from Co you are better off seeing more of the ocean sites versus the mountains. NJ is really known for the ocean....and if you want to experience more of the craziness & bars......were everyone hangs out in the summer....that is the place to be...towns such as Point Pleasant, Belmar, Seaside, Wildwood all cater to the 20 somethings (age). Belmar is only about 1.5 hrs from NYC so you can easily spend a day or night there.
